Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a therapeutic approach that helps people understand and harmonise the different parts of their inner self.
Imagine your mind as a family. Just like a real family, it has various members, each with its own personality, feelings, and roles. These "members" or "protector parts" of your mind can sometimes be in conflict with each other, leading to emotional distress or unhealthy behaviours.
Key Concepts of IFS:
Protector Parts:
These are the different aspects of your personality. For example, you might have a part that feels angry, a part that feels sad, a part that wants to please others, and a part that seeks safety. These parts try to keep you safe and prevent you from feeling pain or hurt.
Self:
This is the core of your being, your true self, which is calm, compassionate, and wise. The Self is capable of understanding and leading your protector parts. Like the CEO of your inner system.
Exiles:
These parts hold the pain and trauma from past experiences. They are often hidden away to protect you from feeling overwhelmed. The pain of the exile is what the inner system wants to soothe, distract or move away from.

Hello. I’m Caroline Strawson, a multi-award-winning Certified Trauma Informed Therapist & Coach and founder of The Mental Wellbeing Company.I may be all that, but I am, first and foremost, human.
Just like you.In 2010, I experienced a series of life changing traumatic events. My mum, who was my rock, died very suddenly, and my husband walked out on me and our two children. I never even realised that I had been experiencing domestic abuse in our marriage.
I was left with over £70,000 ($85,000) worth of debt and at that time; I didn’t even realise I’d experienced severe emotional, psychological and financial abuse.. I was at rock bottom, a shell of myself.Eventually, I was diagnosed with PTSD, and I was suffering from depression, anxiety, panic attacks, and self harm.
All the while thinking “How could an intelligent woman like myself, with a medical background, find herself in this situation!?!”I felt stupid, alone, isolated, and in a very dark place. No one seemed to understand what I was going through, and the more I seemed to talk about the abuse I suffered, the more I felt misunderstood. This just perpetuated my feelings of not feeling worthy or good enough.The truth is, I needed someone who understood my trauma, but that person didn’t
exist.
My personal journey with abuse, trauma and healing, paired with my background in neuroscience and professional coaching experience and therapy, inspired me to take this path to educate people like you and this is why The Mental Wellbeing Company was born to challenge the paradigm of traditional ways of understanding our behaviour through a trauma informed lens and the biology and physiology of us as humans.

Caroline Strawson BSc(Hons) PGCert Applied Positive Psychology
Hello. I’m Caroline Strawson, a multi-award-winning Certified Trauma Informed Therapist & Coach and founder of The Mental Wellbeing Company. I may be all that, but I am, first and foremost, human.
Just like you. In 2010, I experienced a series of life changing traumatic events. My mum, who was my rock, died very suddenly, and my husband walked out on me and our two children. I never even realised that I had been experiencing domestic abuse in our marriage from a covert narcissist.
I was left with over £70,000 ($85,000) worth of debt and at that time; I didn’t even realise I’d experienced severe emotional, psychological and financial abuse.. I was at rock bottom, a shell of myself. Eventually, I was diagnosed with PTSD, and I was suffering from depression, anxiety, panic attacks, and self harm.
All the while thinking “How could an intelligent woman like myself, with a medical background, find herself in this situation!?!” I felt stupid, alone, isolated, and in a very dark place. No one seemed to understand what I was going through, and the more I seemed to talk about the abuse I suffered, the more I felt misunderstood. This just perpetuated my feelings of not feeling worthy or good enough.
The truth is, I needed someone who understood my trauma, but that person didn’t exist.
My personal journey with abuse, trauma and healing, paired with my background in neuroscience and professional coaching experience and therapy, inspired me to take this path to educate people like you and this is why The Mental Wellbeing Company was born, to challenge the paradigm of traditional ways of understanding our behaviour through a trauma informed lens and the biology and physiology of us as humans when we experience narcissistic abuse, domestic abuse and coercive control..
I am so passionate about this subject because CHANGE NEEDS TO HAPPEN and alone, I can only do so much!
