Organisations across the world are struggling with spiralling costs, struggling to retain the best staff and harness the immense potential of the company’s collective productivity and creativity and this all hits the bottom line. At the same time, staff are experiencing record levels of stress and burnout, resulting in all-time highs of absence.
15% of working age adults were estimated to have a mental disorder in 2019
$1 trillion is lost globally to workplace mental health issues
264 million people worldwide are affected by depression, making it the leading cause of disability
Mental ill health is responsible for 72 million working days lost
A 2019 study (i) was conducted to evaluate “Does higher employee wellbeing lead to higher productivity, and, ultimately, to tangible benefits to the bottom line of businesses through a meta-analysis of 339 independent research studies.”
This included the wellbeing of 1,882,131 employees and the performance of 82,248 business units, originating from 230 independent organisations across 49 industries in the Gallup client database.
The results produced a significant, strong positive correlation between employees' satisfaction with their company and employee productivity and customer loyalty, and a strong negative correlation with staff turnover.
Ultimately, higher wellbeing at work is positively correlated with more business-unit level profitability.
There’s been a 25% global increase in depression and anxiety since 2020, with almost 1 billion people worldwide facing mental health challenges.
Over 72 million working days are lost each year in the UK for causes related to mental health. Based on 2022 World Bank figures, that equates to $6.9 billion wiped from the UK’s GDP due to Mental Health causes.
Furthermore, the HSE states that “Whether work is causing the health issue or aggravating it, employers have a legal responsibility to help their employees. Like any other safety or health hazard at work, work-related mental health issues must be assessed to measure the levels of risk to staff. Where a risk is identified, steps must be taken to remove it or reduce it as far as reasonably practicable.”
Apart from your legal obligations, mental health challenges are costing organisations across the UK dearly:
Lost Productivity
Conflict in the Workplace
Toxic Culture
High Levels of Absence
High Levels of Staff Turnover
Lost Creativity
Reduced Profitability
Staff Satisfaction is Suffering
